okay, so yeah, I was talking with mah friend Ru about some fics. It really just started with us chattin' 'bout PotC and the like and then it drifted as usual. She mentioned sharing a Norrington fic with me and I was all 'no' and somehow that lead to her ranting about a summary she had come across. That got us, for the millionth time, ranting about how some members of FF.Net should be shot.

Which led to this:

Has anyone, who might be a regular at the Jak section of FF.Net, noticed how utterly screwed over it is? Tis sad. Really sad.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, let me make a mental pie chart for you;

First you've got your five percent of really good fics. And I do mean really good fics. Mind-blowing plot, great one-liners in the dialogue and description itself, everyone's in character. The shit is gold. But tis really REALLY hard to find.

Then there's the five percent of starter-fics. These are from authors who are still kinda getting their bearings, but they're on the right track. They have the plot, but there's still a little bumps here and there, like the occasional plot hole or moment of out-of-character-ness. Even all that can be over looked, and eventually these authors are gonna continue to improve and drift over into the five percent of glorious fics. These still, tho, are hard to find.

Now, next there's the ten percent of what I like to call 'The Crap Back-story' fics. If you ever wanted to know what angsty past your favorite characters led, filled with more OOC moments and Mary-Sues than you can shake a stick at, these are for you. Now don't get me wrong, not all back-stories suck, tis just that all the ones that don't are in the five percent you love. THESE ones, in THIS ten percent, suck. Badly.

If that wasn't enough, there's the forty percent of Mary-Sues and/or "I got sucked into the game" fics. You'd think after all the bashing these get everywhere, people would get the hint that they're never any good. Especially when no one seems to feel the need to be original with their 'Sues. I've noticed a huge trend of "Jak's long lost sister named Fallen"s running around. And the "Sucked" fics are worse. I have no idea why so many people seem to think their's is any different from anyone else’s.

And last, and most certainly least, are the forty percent of crossover fics. And I'm not talking good crossovers or even the bad crossovers where random characters from another dimension just randomly pop in to say hi. I mean someone took a movie and just changed all the characters and made them Jak-esque. It is the most idiotic thing ever. I can understand not being able to come up with your own plots, but that sure as hell doesn't give you the right to rip them straight from Hollywood. Tis pathetic.

So there you go. That is how I feel about the Jak section on Fanfiction.Net. This isn't to tell anyone what they should write. This isn't to tell you what to read. This is my personal view and I'm hoping I'm not the only one.

And for those who DO feel my pain, I wish you happy searching and send with you hope that one day people will be original and creative again and that, one day, the Jak section of FF.Net will be a glorious, glorious place.
